Dobell welcomes competitive spirit

Keynote address at the the Modern Railways / Railway Forum Fourth Friday Club lunch in November 2005 was given by Malcolm Dobell, Chairman of the Railway Division of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Click here to view the Power Point presentation used at this meeting.

Mr Dobell, a career railwayman at London Underground, had a few tips for those that sought to turn out an excellent fleet:

He was sceptical of the notion that having a manufacturer undertaking train maintenance automatically feeds into better design of trains next time around, as often the manufacturing company's maintenance team is as distant from the same company's manufacturing team as would be an operator's own maintainers. Mr Dobell advocated cooperation between companies rather than strict adherence to contracts: The words "I am doing all that my contract requires" equals failure' he said.

The Railway Division Chairman urged operators to value their engineers. "We recognise there is lots to do, but success can still be celebrated" he said, handing over to Roger Ford to present the Golden Spanner trophies that mark that success.
