CHRISTOPHER GARNETT

CHIEF EXECUTIVE, GREAT NORTH EASTERN RAILWAY

(Speaker for the March 2006 meeting)

Christopher Garnett joined the transport industry in 1986 when he was recruited by Sea Containers to run the Continental European routes of Sealink British ferries.

In 1990, following the Stena AB take over of Sealink, he joined Eurotunnel as Commercial Director for the launch of the Channel Tunnel “Le Shuttle” freight and car services.

In April 1996, having returned to Sea Containers, he led the successful bid for the GNER franchise for operating high speed passenger trains between King's Cross, Leeds, York and Edinburgh. GNER's original 7-year franchise was extended until April 2005. GNER has since won the competition for a new franchise which will operate for a further 10 years. Over this period GNER will be making substantial payments to the Government for the franchise. GNER has formed a Joint Venture with Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway (MTR) to bid for the Integrated Kent Franchise.

Christopher was Chairman of the Association of Train Operating Companies from December 2001 to August 2003.

In July 2004 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Civil Law from Northumbria University.

Christopher was appointed Senior Vice President of the Rail Division of Sea Containers in October 2004.

 

ROBIN GISBY

(Speaker for the January 2006 meeting)

Robin Gisby was appointed Director, Operations and Customer Services for Network Rail in May 2004 and is responsible for all operational and customer issues across the rail network via eight Route Directors and five central staff covering Customer Services, Operational Services, Network Performance, Operations Development and Operational Planning.  The scope of his role covers 18,000 trains a day, 8100 staff and a £300m cost budget; the management of operational safety and performance across the network and at Network Rail's 17 Managed Stations; relationships with the train operating companies, Passenger Transport Executives, and the Welsh Assembly; the development of new timetables; the development of new local enhancement schemes and bringing new services into operation.

Mr Gisby was born in 1956 and graduated from Oxford University with an MA in Engineering Science in 1978.  He later gained an MBA from Manchester Business School in1984.

Mr Gisby has held previous roles in the company including Director of the Southern Region and Director of the Eastern Region and prior to these held the posts of Director, Network Development and Director, Freight.

Before joining Railtrack in 1997 he had a wide range of engineering and operational roles in both the UK and overseas mainly with GKN plc.

 

RUFUS BOYD

COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR, SOUTH WEST TRAINS

Born in Bangor , North Wales , Rufus is a career railwayman, having spent all his adult life working for British Rail and its various successors.

He grew up in Sevenoaks, where he went to school, later going to Oxford to read Modern History. From University, he joined the British Rail General Management Training Scheme in 1987, working in a number of operational posts in London and the East Midlands, before returning to London as a Parliamentary Relations Manager for the British Railways Board. He undertook further roles in the public relations field and a transfer to the newly-formed Railtrack in 1994 involved speech writing for both Sir Bob Reid and Sir Bob Horton. More senior roles followed in managing the relationship between Railtrack and Train Operating Companies – in particular in relation to track access contracts. His last role in Railtrack was as Head of Projects for Railtrack's East Anglia Zone, driving through the West Anglia Route Modernisation. He left in 2001 to join South West Trains as their Commercial Director where amongst other things he sponsored the 455 refurbishment and December 2004 timetable development. He is now seconded to Stagecoach to support their bid team.

 

JOHN THOMPSON

1973 - Joined BR at Divisional Manager's Office Wimbledon - In Passenger General section, processing Revenue Protection reports. Series of clerical jobs at DMO, area and station level.

1980-1990 - In the US for BritRail Travelk International (a BR subsidiary) promoting train travel in the UK and Europe for "car and plane captivated Americans".

1990-1994 - NSE and South Central in Retail Change Projects (standards, training, then restructuring for privatisation).

1994-1996 - Retail Manager South Central

1996-1998 - Franchise PLan Project Manager (oversaw refurbishment of 319s for Brighton, installation of first ticket gates in privatised world, implementation of the South London Metro and Gatwick Rugby services.....)

1998-2001 - Operations Manager (managing drivers and train presentation at Brighton and then Kent Metro).

2001-2006 - Head of Operations, managing Training Planning, Operations Standards and Operational training); also led for SET all matters relating to the transition between Connex and GoVia).

 

TONY BROWN

1982 - Joined BR as Technical Apprentice

1986 - Moved to Twisley depot Sheffield and later to Toton depot looking after Class 56 and 58 locos on MQR duty.

1990 - Moved to join Intercity Fleet Engineering Group Derby working on GW ATP project.

1994 - Moved to York to manage the IC225 fleet for Intercity East Coast later GNER.

1997 - Elected CEng

2001 - Became Chief Engineer GNER.
